In this workshop, Ethel will equip you with the knowledge and techniques to knit your own lace scarf or stole. Included in your time together is a short history of Estonian lace and other laces from Northern Europe, the special stitches that make these laces different and how the traditional shawl is constructed including how the border is attached.

You will learn how to knit star stitches, nupps, cross stitches and the daisy flower stitch. You will also learn how Estonians cast on and cast off and how to read charts.

This workshop is aimed at confident beginners and intermediate knitters. You should be able to knit and purl and cast on and off. Chart reading will be taught. You're welcome to bring your own 3.75mm or 4.0mm needles with you, however all materials will be supplied on the day.

There will be lots of knitting and lots of fun! Tea/coffee and cookies too :-)

There will be a short break for lunch. You are welcome to bring your lunch with you or we can suggest a few good restaurants nearby.

This workshop is led by Ethel Hillier.

Great workshop!

I attended this workshop in February. I am a fairly experienced knitter and familiar with chart reading but I wanted to take it to the next level with such intricate lace work.

The session started with introduction to different types of lace from across Europe and soon we started our own swatches following a helpful pattern provided by Ethel. In the afternoon we learned all about 'nupps' and at the end of the day we had produced a lovely sample swatch of beautiful lace stitches.

Ethel is such a wonderful and encouraging teacher. There was not a single question she could answer and any mishaps we encountered with our swatches she was able to identify and help us how to fix it.

I am definitely inspired to knit a detailed lace shawl as my next project!

Brilliant!

I did this workshop last May and it was wonderful! Ethel is an extremely knowledgeable lady and more than generous in sharing her expertise. I couldn't wait to get home and begin my own Estonian lace shawl. If you have any interest in advancing your lace knitting skills, then this is the way to do it.
