Each year West Yorkshire Spinners processes thousands of kilos of British wool; every spin leaves an excess amount of material that would usually wind up as ‘waste’. Now, instead of disposing the waste, they've given it a bit of a 'revival'.

They start by collecting all the fibre that is gathered after each clean down of the spinning frames. Next, it gets sent to a local production partner to card, comb and convert back into tops before it arrives back to the mill for spinning. This spun yarn then heads out again to be dyed locally, and once dyed, it’s back for finishing, balling and packing. Sustainability is at the heart of everything West Yorkshire Spinners does, and all of this takes place within a 10-mile radius of their mill – something they're extremely proud of.

Why we love West Yorkshire Spinners

Beginnings

West Yorkshire Spinners was founded in 1997 in Yorkshire, the original home of the British worsted spinning industry. Setting up a spinning mill from the ground up was daunting, but with hard work and a determination to succeed, they built a strong reputation for high-quality natural-fibre yarns. By 2012, they launched their own yarn – Fleece 100% Bluefaced Leicester – to help champion British wool and its fascinating heritage. Working closely with farmers and wool merchants, they started to build a range of unique and innovative products that showcased what could be achieved by blending British wool and manufacturing ingenuity.

Always Innovative

When creating natural-fibre yarns, they carefully combine traditional skills with state-of-the-art technology to ensure they're always one step ahead. From the finest and purest breed-specific fleece to delicate Mulberry silk, sustainable British alpaca and natural plant fibres, the materials inspire everything they do and each process is crafted by their in- house creative team, around the unique characteristics of the fibre and blend. This care and attention also extends into dyeing and they work with local dyers and their in-house dye plant to ensure quality and consistency.

Animal & Environment Friendly

Extolling the virtues of British wool is important, but they also know it’s crucial to provide a complete – and fully transparent – story for people who want to craft with the highest-quality fibres. They prioritise traceability, being socially responsible and all of their wools are non-mulesed, ensuring the best welfare for the sheep who grow their wool!
