In this workshop we'll focus on tips and techniques for sewing up your knitting and picking up stitches. This workshop is for everyone- beginners as well as experienced knitters.
You will learn the best ways to sew your knitting seams, joining smoothly, evenly and quickly and you will be shown how to complete your knitted garments with perfectly picked up neck edges and button bands that look professional.
You will have lots of opportunity to ask questions in this 2.5 hour workshop.
You will need to bring the following to the workshop:
- Two stocking stitch squares worked with a DK weight yarn that measure 10 cm square. This is usually about 22 - 24 stitches and 28 - 30 rows
- A pair of 4.0 mm needles
This workshop is led by Jackie Millichap

About our workshops
Our workshops are designed to be a place where you can relax, learn, and have fun! They are held at our large table at the back of the shop and are limited to 5 participants. If a workshop is full, you can ask to be put on the waiting list.
If you need to cancel your booking, we require 3 full business days to issue you a refund. After that, we will only be able to offer a refund if someone else takes your place. Also, don't forget to put your workshop in your diary! We don't have a reminder system, and are sad when folks miss a booking.
Thank you Jackie, for such an informative and very well organised class - even adjusting quickly and smoothly to an extra participant.
I’ve been knitting for nigh on 70 years - using the method my Mum taught me, to slip the first stitch of each row, and consequently (so I now know), struggling to achieve a proper mattress stitch, or knowing which stitch to pick up along an edge. WELL, the best tip Jackie gave me was to knit the first stitch, unless the pattern says otherwise. That way, you can easily find which stitch you need to pick up. With the slipped stitch, there is only one available on alternate rows. Genius when you know 🤦🏻♀️
I came with two friends, who have been knitting an equal amount of years, and we all learnt something.
Quite apart from spending an afternoon in the best knitting shop I know. Thank you. I’ll bring in the finished cardi soon x
Thanks to Jackie for an excellent class today. I've been knitting for years but Jackie gave lots of hints and tips about achieving a more professional finish, especially for picking up extra stitches for bands and collars
Being a new knitter I thought this might be partly too advanced for me but it is a brilliant workshop taken at a pace where everyone (even me) understood the techniques. This is invaluable information and Jackie is very patient! Highly recommended even for a seasoned knitter who can learn new techniques.
I had always struggled with neatly picking up stitches and sewing up finished projects. This workshop demystified all of this for me, I still need practice but the instructions leaflet we took away with us is so clear I can refer to it anytime. My latest project has the finish I'd always wanted, but didn't know how to achieve before, I even blocked for the first time!
This was great! Although I need to learn patience and do those tension tests, and have a go at blocking!
Thank you for inspiring me.😊
