Stripy Top CAL

Our next Crochet-a-long with Sam is a Sirdar pattern, a vest (or tank top!) worked in a DK yarn. The original pattern uses Sirdar's new summery yarn, Stories, but you can use any DK yarn you like for this versatile design!

This Crochet-a-long is an ideal introduction to working from a crochet pattern as the design is written in a standard pattern style. We won't make specific instructional videos as the techniques used are all very straightforward and all the stitches are made using the treble stitch (UK terms). Instead we will offer support and advice, recommending existing online tutorials for any challenges that crop up along the way. However we have made an introduction video that you can view on our YouTube page here

In our video introduction we talk about the construction of the garment and briefly show the yarn options that we put together as ideas. Sam and Ella wear two finished tank tops made in different yarns, and Sam has added length to her top, making it work well as a tunic for layering.

Garment Construction and Skills Required

The top is constructed by working two separate pieces, a front and a back, and then joining them together by seaming.

You start by crocheting a length of ribbing for the bottom by crocheting into the back loop only as you work. When the ribbing is complete you pick up and crochet along the side of the piece you just made. The textured pattern along the body of the garment is made by alternating between working trebles into every stitch for one row, and on the next row working three trebles into a stitch and then missing two stitches. There is some shaping at the armholes and then each shoulder is worked separately. After you have made a front and a back piece you seam them together and work a double crochet edging.

It's all quite simple and, although it may seem daunting to a beginner, we will be able to point you to any tutorials that you need.

Suggested Yarns

The yarn suggestions that we put together are:

Sirdar Stories

This is the yarn that the pattern was written for, a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. It has qualities from each of the fibres, the cotton is cool and smooth and the acrylic adds some lightness and stretch. The colour range is playful and fun! This is the perfect option for an inexpensive and easy to care for summer top.

The colours suggestions we put together are (from left to right):

  • Surf, Spicy, Karma
  • Cosmo, Smile, Sunseekers
  • Queen, Reunion, Picnic

You can view all of the Stories colours that we stock here.

West Yorkshire Spinners Elements

A beautiful blend of 60% Tencel and 40% Falkland Island wool, this yarn is soft, smooth and drapey. It feels light to wear and has an elegant sheen. This is a great choice for a summer top that can be easily dressed up!

The colours suggestions we put together are:

  • Cool Aloe, Golden Sands, Fresh Water (the colours Ella is wearing)
  • Living Coral, Golden Sands, Cherry Blossom
  • Moonlight, Seashell, Palm Leaf

You can view all of the Elements colours that we stock here.

Eden Cottage Milburn

Milburn is a popular favourite in the shop! It's such a great blend of 85% Bluefaced Leicester and 15% silk. It feels soft and luxurious but is also very practical and hard-wearing. This is a great choice for a cosy vest as the high wool content will make it quite warm to wear.

The colours suggestions we put together are:

  • Bramble, Black Tulip, Catmint (the colours Sam is wearing)
  • Compost, Rust, Crocosmia
  • Wicker, Fern, Estuary

You can view all of the Milburn DK colours that we stock here.

We have many other options available both in terms of colours and yarn bases. Trudi plans to make her vest all in one colour of Sirdar Stories for an easy to wear summer top. Ella intends to use two yarns from her stash along with a neutral shade of Superfine Alpaca DK for a soft and cosy vest to wear over long-sleeved tops.

We'd be delighted to help advise on yarn choices, and also the quantities required.
